5 Tips From a Kids Dentist to Prevent Cavities

A kids dentist can restore teeth with tooth decay or cavities through treatments such as dental fillings and crowns. However, the best treatment is always prevention. Fortunately, a kids dentist has tips and techniques to help parents and children prevent cavities before they can form. Following these tips makes it possible for your child to avoid the discomfort that comes with cavities and enjoy good oral health as they grow up.

Encourage consistent brushing and flossing

Parents can prevent cavities by encouraging twice daily brushing and at least daily flossing. If the child cannot do these oral hygiene practices independently, the parent should do it for them. However, parents should encourage their children to make early attempts at brushing and flossing under their supervision. The parent can then provide positive feedback to help the child master proper technique.

Brushing and flossing are important because anyone, no matter how long, is prone to plaque buildup on their teeth, which can calcify into tartar. If left alone, the acids in tartar will cause cavities. Consistent oral hygiene removes plaque before cavities can develop.

Make oral hygiene fun

Oral hygiene does not have to be a chore, especially if parents do not present it as one. Using positive reinforcement and praise, parents can make mundane activities like brushing and flossing more fun for children. They can also let the child pick out a toothbrush in their favorite color or a toothpaste in a flavor that appeals to them, such as strawberry, watermelon, blue raspberry, etc.

Offer tooth-friendly drinks and snacks over sugary ones

According to the Cleveland Clinic, sugar-rich beverages and foods increase the risk of cavities. For improved cavity protection, offer the child a more tooth-friendly diet. Kids’ dentists and pediatric dentists recommend water over sodas or juices and nuts, cheese, and crunchy vegetables (think carrots and broccoli) over gummy fruit snacks, dried fruit, and sugary granola bars.

Schedule regular checkups with a kids’ dentist

Dental checkups every six months are essential to cavity prevention, early detection, and treatment. Even if no cavities are found, children still benefit from professional teeth cleaning and thorough oral examinations. For example, a trained dental hygienist can remove tartar without damaging tooth surfaces.

Consider dental sealants or fluoride treatments

A kids dentist or pediatric dentist can provide dental sealants or fluoride treatments at the end of a six-month dental checkup for enhanced cavity prevention. Dental sealants, for instance, act as a protective coating against plaque and tartar on the back teeth. They are ideal for preventing cavities in the deep grooves of molars and premolars, where children may not clean effectively as they learn how to care for their teeth.

Alternatively, fluoride treatments reduce cavity risk by strengthening tooth enamel. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), fluoride is safe for children aged two and older. Ask a kids or pediatric dentist which cavity prevention may be best during an appointment.
