Restorative Dentistry

Restorative Care You Can Find at a Dentistry for Children Office

Like any dentist, dentistry for children can handle much more than regular dental checkups. If your child is complaining about a toothache, has cosmetic issues with a tooth or has developed any other condition, the pediatric dentist can help. Your child is in good hands for a wide range of restorative treatment needs.

Causes of dental problems for kids

Oral health issues can affect people of all ages. Children are often especially prone to these difficulties. Tooth decay is one of the most common problems dentistry for children will address. Poor brushing and flossing habits can lead to cavities or infections. Eating and drinking food and beverages with too much sugar can also be a concern. In addition, active children may injure their teeth from falls, collisions or other accidents.

Cavity repair

Perhaps the most common reason why kids come to the dentistry for children office is to repair tooth decay. The dentist will numb the patient to make sure they are comfortable. After drilling into the tooth, the dentist removes the decay. Most dentists will then use either composite resin or ceramic material to fill the tooth. A child may get a filling on baby teeth and permanent teeth.

Root canals

People dread this treatment, but the pediatric dentist has the knowledge, training and tools to make the child as comfortable as possible. The dentist may need to perform a root canal if the child’s cavity is too large to support a filling. The pediatric dentist may also choose this treatment if the child has an infection in the pulp of the tooth.

Crowns

Also known as a cap, dentistry for children offices may choose this restorative care if the child has a broken, cracked or chipped tooth. The crown protects the tooth from further damage and will stabilize it. Dentists may also use a crown after doing a root canal. First, the dentist will make an impression of the child’s mouth and send it to a lab. A technician will custom-make a crown that matches the shape and color of the surrounding teeth. At the next appointment, the dentist will shave the natural tooth so that the crown fits properly.

For smaller chips

Composite fillings may also be the right choice if the child has a small chip. This is common when the chip is on a front tooth. For this issue, the pediatric dentist may use the same composite material used for a filling. The dentist will make sure the color closely matches that of the other teeth. If there is a chip on a permanent tooth, parents may prefer to get a veneer or crown for the child.

Dentistry for children has your child covered

If your son or daughter has oral health needs, you can feel good about going to the pediatric dentist for help. For minor, moderate or severe conditions, you and your child can feel at ease knowing effective treatments are available. Do not put off care until the next wellness checkup.
