Helping Your Child Feel Comfortable About Visiting an Emergency Pediatric Dentist

Going to an emergency pediatric dentist can be scary for your child and you. There will be concerns and worries anytime your child’s well-being is at risk. The dentist can diagnose and treat even the most severe conditions. Still, to prepare your child, it is helpful to use calming techniques to make the visit as positive as possible.

Going to the emergency pediatric dentist instead of other options

When a child has a significant oral health problem or mouth injury, parents want to respond appropriately. Some parents may rush the child to an urgent care facility. Others may even go to the emergency room. Some caregivers take a less urgent approach and may wait to go to the regular family dentist. An emergency pediatric dentist has the knowledge and training that parents need to feel at ease with their child’s wellness. This dentist focuses on the most serious dental problems common to children.

Provide pain relief

In many cases, a parent will call the emergency pediatric dentist because the child is in extreme pain. This can be because of a large cavity or infection in the tooth’s root. The discomfort may be due to a broken, cracked or dislodged tooth. Parents can help relieve the child’s suffering by giving them Tylenol or ibuprofen before going to the dentist. This may also help calm the child.

Talk about what will happen

A trip to the emergency pediatric dentist could be the child’s first. So, there will likely be some anxiety about what will take place. Parents should be honest and explain some of the things the dentist will do. This may include removing a tooth or doing a root canal.

Stay with the child

Most of the time, the dentist will let a parent come into the exam room with the child. The parent can sit beside the child, hold their hand or reassure the young patient. Parents should remain calm and collected during the visit. It may even be helpful for the parent to talk about an experience they had at the dentist as a youth.

Speak positively

The child may be in pain and may be scared. Still, parents should not overreact about the situation. The caregivers should try to keep emotions in check and avoid negative talk about the event. Parents should talk to the child about the dentist’s role and that this person is here to help the child feel well once more.

A good outcome

Even though there may be some tense moments during your child’s dental emergency, you can help your child stay calm. Your demeanor and actions will go a long way toward making your child’s experience less negative. You can start today by telling your son or daughter about the important role an emergency pediatric dentist has. Going to the office may be intimidating, but with the right approach, your child will be all right. Choose a dentist you feel comfortable with and never hesitate to call if an urgent oral health matter comes up with your young one.
